Don't Starve Together furthers this by heavily characterizing him as depressed, inept at survival, and isolated from the group. His backstory is somewhat tragic, and at the end of Don't Starve, he is depicted as tired and resigned to your presence and his fate. He’s depicted as far more mellow than he was in the original in it when played. Since, he and the rest of the cast have been shown continuing to attempt to escape the Constant, now working as one group. In Don't Starve Together, Maxwell worked with Wilson to create a portal to gather the cast.
After which, he can be played, and is rather annoying and abrasive. In the final room, he can be found bound to the Throne, and the player can choose to put the key in the lock next to him, freeing him and instead forcing the player character onto the throne instead. In Don't Starve, he serves as the primary antagonist, taunting the player characters and offering them the challenge to enter Adventure Mode, where they can attempt to battle the worst he has to offer in an attempt to reach him. His assistant didn’t fare much better, merging with some of the shadows to become the Night Monster, forced to attack anyone left out in the dark. He was bound to the Nightmare Throne by Them, allowing him a minimal amount of control over the dimension but no one to show it off to, eventually leading to him dragging more victims into the Constant with him. During one performance Maxwell and his assistant were pulled into the book by the shadows he summoned and found themselves in the Constant: a purgatory-esque dimension ruled by the shadows and Them.
These powers soon began to overtake him, however, to the point to where his assistant became concerned for his safety. She was unaware of the Codex’s power, instead fascinated by his apparent tricks of the light. This brought with it a show personality of a egotistic and charismatic master of dark magic under the name of Maxwell, and he was able to improve his shows, even hiring an assistant by the name of Charlie. After a train crash, he came into possession of the Codex Umbra, opening a door to a whole new world of dark magic. Getting close to the Door, a faint version of the " Ragtime" song can be heard (referring to the epilogue of Adventure Mode, with the Gramaphone).William Carter was a poor, naïve magician who desired to be famous through any means possible.Maxwell's Door was added to the game with the Doorway to Adventure update.It's also absent in Don't Starve Together. Maxwell's Door does not spawn in Shipwrecked nor Hamlet worlds.
If the player dies in Adventure Mode, they will wake up in front of the Maxwell's Door in Sandbox Mode with their original Inventory, Health, Hunger, and Sanity level as if they never activated the Door. Health, Hunger, and Sanity levels will be restored, however. If they do, the player will be grabbed by a Shadow Hand and then appear in the first chapter of Adventure Mode with no inventory (except special items such as Lucy, Willow's Lighter, or Abigail's Flower) or recipes, so players are required to begin anew in Adventure Mode. Upon activating it, a warning message will appear informing the player about Adventure Mode and asking them if they want to proceed or not. Warning message after the activation of Maxwell's Door. It can be found with the help of a Divining Rod. It resembles the machine which brought Wilson to Maxwell's dimension in the first place, as seen in the animated short Forbidden Knowledge. When the player goes near it, the machine will become active, appearing as Maxwell's face. It's surrounded by Evergreens, Fireflies, and Evil Flowers. Maxwell's Door is a portal that transfers a player from Survival Mode to Adventure Mode.
